From Financial Hurdles To Seven Trophies – Inter Milan President To Leave A Complicated Legacy

Steven Zhang will leave behind a somewhat complicated legacy when his tenure as Inter Milan President ends.

This is highlighted in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews. The newspaper notes both the trophies, and the financial troubles.

Zhang is currently in his sixth year as Inter President.

However, barring any late shock developments, the 32-year-old’s time at the helm is nearly at an end.

With Suning looking set to default on their debt to US fund Oaktree Capital, the fund will replace them as owners.

And with Suning gone, Zhang will not remain Nerazzurri President.

Zhang first took over in his current role in October of 2018.

At that time, things were looking fairly positive for Inter. But there was still work to be done to bring the club back to the top of Italian football.

That is what Zhang did, however.

The appointment of Beppe Marotta as CEO certainly proved to be crucial in this respect.

In the 2020-21 season, Inter won their first Serie A title in eleven years.

And every campaign since, there have been trophies. In the 2021-22 campaign, Inter won both the Coppa Italia and Supercoppa Italiana. It was the same two trophies last season as well.

And last season, Inter also reached the Champions League final.

This time around, the Nerazzurri won the Serie A title and the Supercoppa Italiana.

That makes it seven trophies for Zhang as Inter President – not a bad haul considering it’s been little over half a decade since he took over.

However, Zhang has also presided over a period of major financial problems for Inter.

These issues have resulted from the pandemic and its aftermath, and from the problems that Suning themselves have suffered.
